Description
The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.
This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.
The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.
Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.
By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.
Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.
For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).
However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.
The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:
- Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
- Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
- Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
What is a mandibular advancement device?
A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.
You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.
What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?
Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.
People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.
Do mandibular advancement devices really work?
Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.
Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?
Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Peace at last!
I’m a terrible snorer (according to my husband) and it’s been a particular problem whenever we go away to stay with relatives or on holiday, as he can’t escape to the spare room. So, although I don’t use the SomnoGuard every night, we both now rely on it for a good night’s sleep for both of us whenever we’re away from home. I researched several products on line, did the snore test, and decided the SomnoGuard 3 was the most appropriate solution for me and wasn’t disappointed. It works very well, was easy to fit, and I quickly got used to wearing it all night. It’s definitely worth the cost.
How I (almost) stopped snoring
My wife does not have a problem with my snoring but when I go sailing with a charity the young crew think the rivets will be loosened. So I tried to stop.
It took me a while to work out that I snore from nose and throat (the advice on this site now is excellent but at the time there were few clues).
Nose strips did not do it and eventually I got a stainless steel ‘snore-no-more’. These last forever, but take a bit of getting used to fitting.
Then I got the ‘SomnoGuard 2’ adding this stopped the snoring. It started up again and I found that you need to set the position.
Too far forward and my throat closes over again and too far back and it is ineffective; there is a sweet spot. To find this I adjust it just after waking up,
while still lying in bed and deliberately breathe harder. The sweet spot seems to move over time, maybe due to weight change or tissues becoming softer.
The ‘SomnoGuard 3’ adjustment is during fitting and I found it difficult to work with the softer plastic when doing this (it is easy to over heat and collapse it).
It wont be possible to adjust it as with my ‘2’ so I may have to have more than one- we’ll see. At least the price has come down so buying two or
three won’t need a mortgage. The ‘3’ feels more comfortable in the mouth though.
Works well, very expensive
Practically I have been very happy with this device. I was sceptical that it would work, but it has worked very well. Two criticisms: 1. I bit too hard when molding it and my front teeth have bitten through to the bottom teeth. This has not affected performance but it is wearing out faster than I hoped. 2. The device is outrageously priced for what it is – a piece of thermoplastic.
Tomed SomnoGuard 3
I was amazed with the product, it actually worked, after years of loud snoring, I finally had a quiet night sleep, my partner was very happy. However, it only lasted 4 nights, the Somnoguard wasn’t strong enough! I tried to re mould it as of the instruction but it totally went of shape, I since bought similar guard through my dentist and it’s been fantastic.
Brilliant
Does exactly what is says on the can. Stopped my snoring, wife couldn’t be happier!!
