Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is a two-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. It works by gently holding the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the airway open, using side connectors that allow millimetre-precise adjustment from -3mm to approximately 10mm.

Each jaw tray features a stable outer shell with a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your teeth and bite for a secure, custom fit using the boil-and-bite method. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is suitable for small to medium-sized jaws and is also recommended for individuals with a protruding lower jaw. It allows mouth breathing and slight mouth opening during use.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 1½ years, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is worn at night and uses two side connectors to hold the lower jaw slightly forward. By advancing the jaw, the device opens the upper airway and stabilises the soft tissues, reducing their vibration and fluttering, which are responsible for snoring sounds.

The adjustable jaw advancement (from -3mm to approximately 10mm) allows you to find the optimal position to keep your airway open. This helps reduce snoring and may improve breathing during sleep by limiting airway obstruction associated with mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® SP fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please carefully follow the detailed instructions included with your product.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft uses the boil-and-bite method. Each jaw tray consists of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite when cooled.

The fitting process takes about 20 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the upper and lower jaw trays in boiling water for approximately 3½ minutes.
  2. Carefully bite into the softened trays so the material adapts to your individual tooth shape.
  3. Cool both trays in cold water so the material hardens and retains your dental impressions. The fitting process can be repeated if needed (e.g., if the trays do not fit optimally).
  4. Attach the side connectors and adjust the lower jaw advancement to the desired position.

The lower jaw advancement is adjusted using the included side connectors, which come in a range of lengths. These connect the upper and lower trays laterally, allowing millimetre-precise forward positioning of the lower jaw, from -3mm to approximately 10mm. Greater advancement helps open the airway more effectively, which may help reduce snoring and nighttime breathing pauses.

I tried this because i was travelling and could not use my CPAP where i was going. I found fitting it was quite difficult and frightening. Once fitted it took a long time trying to fiddle with the band’s to get the right setting, and this was hard work as they are very a very tight for into the nipples and I worried I would break the device. Building up tolerance was very slow and I can still only use it for a couple of hours. Sadly i still find I am waking and snoring so possibly the mandibular advancement device is not for me….. An expensive fail possibly but better than nothing if CPAP is not possible. It is very bulky in the mouth. I would love something which is less intrusive.

Pleasantly surprised

I was sceptical but took the plunge having been told my snoring wasn’t acceptable and that I was stopping breathing. Very easy to mould; takes a bit of setting correctly and getting used to, but night sweats stopped immediately and am now sleeping more soundly than I have for years.

Peace at last!

My snoring had gradually become worse to the point that I had started sleeping in the spare room so that my long suffering husband could get a proper sleep as he often has to get up early. Having researched online and read previous reviews I decided to give the Somnoguard SP a go. I found the instructions reasonably easy to follow and fitted the device without a problem. Spending time making sure of a good fit is worth the effort. The first night it felt a bit strange to wear however it has stopped the snoring, Result! We are now both getting a good nights sleep as my husband used to spend all night prodding me awake so neither of us slept well, and the minor discomfort soon passed as I have gotten used to wearing it. I would highly recommend this product. It has been a minor miracle and peace has been restored!

Works well for me

I previously tried a cheaper product from another manufacturer to see if an advancement device would work for me in principle.I found that the cheaper item worked, but that it was hard to get a consistent fit.So… I took the plunge and bought one of these. I had to make two attempts at moulding the device to get a good fit, but now that I’ve got a good fit it stays in well. The fact that it allows a fair bit of jaw movement up/down and side-to-side makes it more comfortable than the cheaper device I tried. I initially tried the suggested default advancement setting, but found I had to increase the advancement by one notch to fix my snoring problem. It works for me, anyway.

Excellent product, excellent company, thoroughly recommend!

Ok, so my wife has been giving me grief about my snoring for years. I had the hard version of this product for a while and it made very little difference with my snoring continuing to annoy my good lady. I purchased this soft version about 4 weeks ago and the difference has been amazing. There is a little discomfort at first (I set it to the maximum advancement setting), it’s slightly uncomfortable when it first goes in each night and my teeth seem to have to find their way home each morning when I take it out but all of these issues are minor when compared to the results. My snoring has stopped completely. It is the most expensive product in the range but worth every penny. Before this I was considering surgery. I think it’s effective enough for sufferers of sleep apnoea and even those poor folks who need to plug themselves into a machine at night.BSSAA have a great website with easy and clear navigation and product descriptions and, having ordered a couple of products from them in the past, I can say that their customer service is spot on.I would thoroughly recommend both the SP Soft product and BSSAA to anyone who wants to stay married. My wife has now had to find other reasons to moan about me – thankfully snoring is not one of them!
