Description
The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is a two-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. It works by gently holding the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the airway open, using side connectors that allow millimetre-precise adjustment from -3mm to approximately 10mm.
Each jaw tray features a stable outer shell with a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your teeth and bite for a secure, custom fit using the boil-and-bite method. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is suitable for small to medium-sized jaws and is also recommended for individuals with a protruding lower jaw. It allows mouth breathing and slight mouth opening during use.
The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 1½ years, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.
Please note: Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is worn at night and uses two side connectors to hold the lower jaw slightly forward. By advancing the jaw, the device opens the upper airway and stabilises the soft tissues, reducing their vibration and fluttering, which are responsible for snoring sounds.
The adjustable jaw advancement (from -3mm to approximately 10mm) allows you to find the optimal position to keep your airway open. This helps reduce snoring and may improve breathing during sleep by limiting airway obstruction associated with mild to moderate OSA.
Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.
For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).
However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please carefully follow the detailed instructions included with your product.
The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft uses the boil-and-bite method. Each jaw tray consists of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite when cooled.
The fitting process takes about 20 minutes and involves the following steps:
- Heat the upper and lower jaw trays in boiling water for approximately 3½ minutes.
- Carefully bite into the softened trays so the material adapts to your individual tooth shape.
- Cool both trays in cold water so the material hardens and retains your dental impressions. The fitting process can be repeated if needed (e.g., if the trays do not fit optimally).
- Attach the side connectors and adjust the lower jaw advancement to the desired position.
The lower jaw advancement is adjusted using the included side connectors, which come in a range of lengths. These connect the upper and lower trays laterally, allowing millimetre-precise forward positioning of the lower jaw, from -3mm to approximately 10mm. Greater advancement helps open the airway more effectively, which may help reduce snoring and nighttime breathing pauses.

Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft
I have to say the Somnoguard soft i have bought is the best £140.00 i have spent. my partner now does not leave the bedroom to escape the noise of my snoring, as i am now nearly silent in sleep. And she has informed me that my sleep apnoea has subsided dramatically, and i feel so much better in the morning a good sign that it has helped reduce the sleep apnoea.
This really really helped!
I didn’t want to spend £140. But I’m glad I did. And so is my wife. It’s not nice having a big lump of plastic pulling your jaws around while you sleep. But I do sleep well with it in, and it’s way better than snoring and being in a separate bedroom, or causing your wife to hate holidays where there is no such option. I hope it lasts a good long time. But to be perfectly honest, it will still be worth it if its a few months.
continued use update
After a few months of use all is still good with the SomnoGuard SP Soft. I use the electric toothbrush to gently clean it each morning with a spot of toothpaste. The device is now extremely comfortable and I don’t notice it in my mouth at all during the night, I never thought I would get used to it being in my mouth. I still get a slight bit of aching when I take it out in a morning but this lasts just a minute or two. My wife is now getting significantly better sleep at night and I’m sure I do also.

I am a veteran snorer of twenty years. Last week my dentist fitted a Tomed SomnoGuard soft, and though my 1st night’s sleep was a bit broken…I slept for 6 hours without moving on the nightfollowing. I did feel that the expertise of a dentist is useful in fitting the device for me anyway, and I have no discomfort. Whether I have stopped snoring…my energy levels will reveal as time goes on. My only companion ; my dog, is unable to tell me !
Review Title
This device certainly did stop me snoring. I have noted a few points which may be of interest. You need to take care and read the instructions a few times to ensure you get a good fit. Don’t trim off the unused fixing points until you are sure you have tried the device for a few days (it is possible to fit the device the wrong way so the lower jaw is pulled in instead of out). When the device is put in and you turn the light out for the first night it feels like you have your mouth full but over the coming weeks the device is less obtrusive as the brain gets used to it being there. I certainly did not feel any gagging feeling at all and I never feel the device could restrict my breathing in anyway. I have found that on a few nights I have taken the device out and placed it next to the bed without knowing. Putting in the device and taking it out in the morning still gives an aching sensation which goes after a few mins. There is also a pulling sensation on the top front teeth which I suppose is to be expected. I would suggest mentioning it to your dentist on the next check up so they can ensure the tooth position is not changing or deforming. If my mouth is dry (after a few beers) then the device can wake me up early due to discomfort. It’s expensive but it works. I just hope the device is robust enough to last. I have not looked into the cost of spares as yet. If I have any issues with the device I’ll try to remember to post it here.
