Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is a two-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. It works by gently holding the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the airway open, using side connectors that allow millimetre-precise adjustment from -3mm to approximately 10mm.

Each jaw tray features a stable outer shell with a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your teeth and bite for a secure, custom fit using the boil-and-bite method. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is suitable for small to medium-sized jaws and is also recommended for individuals with a protruding lower jaw. It allows mouth breathing and slight mouth opening during use.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 1½ years, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft is worn at night and uses two side connectors to hold the lower jaw slightly forward. By advancing the jaw, the device opens the upper airway and stabilises the soft tissues, reducing their vibration and fluttering, which are responsible for snoring sounds.

The adjustable jaw advancement (from -3mm to approximately 10mm) allows you to find the optimal position to keep your airway open. This helps reduce snoring and may improve breathing during sleep by limiting airway obstruction associated with mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® SP fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please carefully follow the detailed instructions included with your product.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft uses the boil-and-bite method. Each jaw tray consists of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic inner layer that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite when cooled.

The fitting process takes about 20 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the upper and lower jaw trays in boiling water for approximately 3½ minutes.
  2. Carefully bite into the softened trays so the material adapts to your individual tooth shape.
  3. Cool both trays in cold water so the material hardens and retains your dental impressions. The fitting process can be repeated if needed (e.g., if the trays do not fit optimally).
  4. Attach the side connectors and adjust the lower jaw advancement to the desired position.

The lower jaw advancement is adjusted using the included side connectors, which come in a range of lengths. These connect the upper and lower trays laterally, allowing millimetre-precise forward positioning of the lower jaw, from -3mm to approximately 10mm. Greater advancement helps open the airway more effectively, which may help reduce snoring and nighttime breathing pauses.

Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Tomed SomnoGuard SP Soft

I bought this product several weeks ago and to my surpriswe it has been very successful. I did the snore tests which indicated that this device was what I needed and my wife says that my snoring has mainly stopped with only occasional sounds meaning she gets a nights sleep. The device takes a bit of getting used to but with perseverance it is fine.

Good product

I have been using this for several weeks now and it works. My husband says I still make the occasional noise (which is my sleep apnoea) and that is still snore slightly but the extra loud snoring that kept the whole neighbourhood awake has stopped. Although it is comfortable enough I still wake up during the early hours of the morning and take it out as it makes my teeth ache a bit – but I would recommend this to everyone that snores.

It works!

I have known that I snore for years, people have never hesitated to tell me and it has all been a bit of a joke for everyone except me! Fortunately my partner sleeps like a log and has rarely complained. I have only tried to do something about it when I have been sharing a room with another person, and nothing has ever worked. I have tried sprays and drops and nasal strips, and once a much cheaper MAD. A few months ago my partner described what sounded like sleep apnoea to me. I had a holiday planned with a girlfriend, so I trawled the Internet, did the snore tests on this site and ordered a SomnoGuard SP. I thought I was probably throwing my money away but was feeling desperate. The first two weeks of wearing it were really difficult as I had a very painful jaw each morning and found it uncomfortable to eat. I persevered because my partner said it worked and I adjusted it to the longest strap. After 2 weeks it steadily became more comfortable and after a month it felt absolutely fine. No one has heard me snore since, result! I have now been wearing it every night for 3 months and am very happy with it. Yes I go to sleep each night with a mouth full of plastic but it just shows what you can get used to. Recommended.

Tomed Somnogard SP Soft

I deliberated for many months before purchasing this, as it did seem to be expensive (and I still think it is) but I have no regrets now and wish I had made up my mind earlier. I made my decision after trying the snoring tests on the website which were very helpful. Fitting the device was much easier than I expected (even after watching the video a few times) but one needs to be careful that no metal (such as tweezers or tongs) touches the gel while it is hot, after coming out of the boiling water, as the gel sticks to the metal and can spoil the result. The fit is excellent and neither upper or lower teeth dislodge during the night. It took a week or so to become used to the device in the mouth but after that it was quite comfortable. I do not dribble any more than I used to during the night, can breathe through my mouth if I want to, can move my lower jaw from side to side and I do not get any tooth or jaw aching. Best of all, my wife has no complaints, at all, after years of putting up with my loud snoring! An excellent result!

Somnoguard SP SOft

My snoring was making it impossible to sleep with my wife. I have found this product very effective in alleviating my snoring problem; it is still too soon to be conclusive but the initial experience, over three weeks, is that my snoring is greatly reduced, and my wife can get a comfortable night’s sleep beside me. It took a week to get used to having the guard in my mouth, and I still occasionally find it uncomfortable and remove it if I wake during the night – but this does not diminish the benefits, as I tend not to snore then.It is by far the most effective and usable product that I have found, having tried other gum shields etc and I can recommend it to others, to at least give it a trial.
