The British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association

The British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association

The British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association was formed in 1991 to help snorers and their bed partners to end the nights of disturbed and lost sleep, to end the bad feelings that often develop and to help them return again to peaceful nights together.

The aims of the association are to promote public awareness that snoring and sleep apnoea are generally treatable complaints and that help is available. We offer information on causes and treatments and this can be obtained from our web site or by telephone to one of our help line advisers. We also have a close working relationship with the medical profession and provide them and their patients with our expert help and information.

In February 2011, British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association was accredited under the Department of Health’s Information Standard, which recognises trustworthy producers of health and social care information.

This means you can be assured that the information you receive from us has been produced through highly credible and accurate processes. The Information Standard assessed the processes we use to develop information against the rigorous information standard.

We sell a range of anti snoring products that have all undergone robust clinical trials and have been proven effective for the purpose for which they were designed. We provide NHS hospitals with our products and GPs and consultants frequently refer their patients to us.

We regularly undertake research into all areas of snoring and sleep apnoea and our papers have been presented to the medical profession and featured in peer review journals. One of our surveys - Snoring & Sexual Relationships was presented at the Royal Society of Medicine and also at the British Sleep Society Annual Conference.

We pride ourselves on our high level of expertise that we continue to develop by attending study days and conferences with our medical colleagues. Our membership of organisations such as the Royal Society of Medicine, The British Thoracic Society, The European Sleep Research Society and The British Sleep Society enables us to meet with other health professionals to exchange ideas and information.

In 2004 we joined forces with other organisations and charities who have an interest in snoring and sleep apnoea, to form the Sleep Alliance. The aims of the Sleep Alliance are to lobby Parliament to provide better facilities for sleep medicine.

The British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association has a very high media profile and our directors have appeared on many TV shows with celebrities such as Gloria Hunniford, Richard & Judy, Matthew Kelly, Carol Vordeman, Robert Kilroy. We have also assisted in the making of TV programmes such as Solution Street with Gabby Rosalind and the BBCs Inside Out. We have even made the 6 O'clock news on both ITV and BBC television!

In 1998 the TV programme Tomorrow's World, featured our very popular Somni Snore Guard. This oral vestibular shield was a revolutionary new product designed to help those snorers who are 'mouth breathers'. It is now one of our most popular products. In February 2005 Professor Winston in his programme How to Sleep Better, featured a device which is a simple but very effective treatment for snoring. The device known as a mandibular advancement device has changed the lives of thousands of snorers. Our very own Tomed SomnoGuard is a similar device and is now our most popular product for 'tongue base' snorers.

We are interviewed on radio several times a week and have regular 'slots' on many shows. The written press always want 'snoring stories' and we feature at least once a week in a newspaper or magazine. Our press releases are renowned for catching the attention of the media as snoring continues to be a popular subject. Our Media and Marketing Director is a member of the Medical Journalists' Association.
