Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Relationship Saver

Purchasing and using this is an absolute revelation. Amazing is a superlative that is just bandied around these days, but to use amazing when describing what it has done for my wife and I is an absolute truth. Our relationship was on the brink of meltdown (not breakdown) because of my snoring. I felt rotten because of what my snoring was causing and my wife felt rotten because of a lack of sleep and the related job issues, in particular attendance. However, we purchased this on the Tues lunchtime and it was here by the Thur lunchtime so top marks for a prompt service, especially during the Christmas rush.Having read a few reviews, paying attention to the fitting issues and having read the instructions a couple of times I was confident to fit. It really was as straight forward as the instructions suggest, despite the manufacturers recommendation to get it done professionally. Just remember to suck, push with the tongue and on the sides with your fingers. It works. I did find the initial fit not quite right so I immediately remoulded (remembering to only submerge in hot water for 10secs on successive remoulds) and achieved a good fit.Now I snore fairly shortly after hitting the pillow and I have been known to snore with the best of them. My snoring is exacerbated when I have a cold or when I drink alcohol. My first night of use was on the Thursday, after my works do and with the obligatory seasonal cold in tow as well. So coupled with the fact that this was to be my first wearing it was an absolute trial by fire. The perfect storm so to speak!Result! I did not snore. I did not spit it out, choke have breathing issues or anything else. This thing, in my case, really does work. Second night of wearing last night with duplicate results. It really is easy to wear (poss I have a big mouth!). If unsure of the lower jaw position required just ensure that the lower teeth are in line with the upper teeth when moulding, well that was enough for me to bring my lower jaw forward and stop the dreaded snoring.Difficult to believe that something this simple in relative terms (although I do appreciate the technology that has gone into it) can have such an absolute and startlingly profound effect.Would I recommend this product? Abso-bloody-lutely! In fact I’ve already recommended it to two friends who are also in the professional snoring club.Tomed SomnoGuard 3 – A HUGE THANKYOU, from both my wife and me.Merry Christmas.

Not impressed

I’ve used the previous models and been happy with them. This one does not impress, probably my own fault. The instructions do say in bold that for best results it should be professionally fitted, which trebles the cost of the appliance at the least. When it comes to fitting, getting the timings right as regards the hot water is crucial. To long, even by seconds, in the water and it is far too soft. As it says in the instructions, fitting can be repeated, which was essential. However, while fitting nicely, it is far bulkier that the previous version to the point of discomfort. I’ve gone back to the old one, I hope I can get another.

Has helped my wife a hell of a lot

Has significantly reduced the amount of snoring _ although hasn’t eliminated it entirely. However, in general, it at least works to allow sufficient time for my wife to fall asleep. My wife tells me that snoring isn’t as loud either. It definitely moulds to shape, just follow the video instructions, its very strange the first time you wear it, feels like you can’t breath but actually just need to breath more through your nose, once asleep don’t know its there and after a day or two it just becomes habit.Wife is a lot happier and def less arguments regards sleep, so very happy with this, hope it continues to work.

Fitting trouble

I completed the snore test and this device was recommended and it arrived promptly after ordering. When moulding the device to fit I succeeded in crushing the edges and splitting the where I bite at the front. Therefore I have not used the device because the instructions state that if it is split it should not be used. The instructions do recommend not attempting to mould the device yourself and clearly I am not competent enough to follow the instructions provided.I am going to try to find a technician/dentist who can fit/make a device for me.As a result I cannot possibly recommend this device.
