Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

greatly improved

My husband had the previous version of this which helped. However the new version with the better design is even better than before and the snoring even less.

Somnoguard 3

I was still snoring (though perhaps less) and I had done only a mediocre job fitting my Somnoguard. I saw the Somnoguard 3 advert and it looked as if it should fit better, better bite depth, etc. With care I moulded the Somnoguard 3 to my teeth/mouth and it fitted very well, it was better than my previous Somnoguard. To get more effect, I remoulded the Somnoguard 3 to set my bottom jaw further forward when sleeping. This process worked well but unfortunately I keep snoring (so I’m told).

Moulding is not easy

Having tried some similar home-mould devices bought on eBay, this one is more rigid – though that may not be a good thing if you have jaw joint problems due to bruxism: mine were quite sore initially. The instructions for heating to boiling point, then the timing of cooling before fitting into mouth, are surprisingly rather vague: surely the rate of cooling is predictable? So I probably waited a few seconds too long and it’s not a good fit. Despite gripes, it has reduced my snoring – but not fully, as I can’t keep it in until early morning, which is when I snore most.

miracle product

I bought the sonno guard 3 with low expectations. I snore very loud, and had it checked in the hospital for APNEA, which I turned out not to have. The only option that I was communicated by the hospital was to have surgery, but at the same time I was warned that that may needs to be done every 5 years or so. All in all, I had little hope this could be resolved. I bought the Sonno guard when we left on holiday for two weeks. My wife can only sleep when we share the room if she takes a sleeping tablet and clearly, that is not a recommended habit. Preparing the Sonno guard is straight forward. The first couple of nights you need to get used to it, but after a week or so, you hardly notice it. The product is in my case incredibly effective…. Snoring completely stopped! Highly recommended!

Tomed SomnoGuard 3

The Tomed SomnoGuard 3 is the second Mandibular Advancement Device I have bought (the first being the original SomnoGuard) and for me is a vast improvement. The heavier build is much better than the previous model I bought and well worth the few extra pounds. I would recommend that when fitting, you take time ensure a tight fit and follow the instructions. I found that moulding slowly, in three 15 second immersions worked best. My partner says that whilst not stopping my snoring completely, it has helped reduce the volume by some 70%, which given how loud I snore otherwise is pretty good.I find it much easier to sleep with it in also and no longer find that I have spat out the device (as previously).
