Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Tomed SomnoGuard 3

So after years of snoring and finally causing my wife to sleep downstairs and not sleeping well something had to be done. I researched and found this device. The science made sense and the success rate and reviews seemed to support it so I bought one. Fitting was easy and in simple terms I have not snored since!Positives I literally stopped snoring as soon as I wore this device. No discomfort for me. My mouth closed fully over the guard so no dry mouth. I am missing a few rear molars and this is not a problem. No personal sleep issues Negatives Apparently I look like Hannibal Lector! Slight teeth realignment in morning which soon corrects. I don’t understand why this doesn’t work for everybody as the science is logical so all I can say is give it a go and be patient. Any negatives will outweigh the positive of not snoring!

Poor quality

This was the 6th MAD I have purchased and I have found them very effective so far. However, when trying to fit this latest one I had a disaster. It collapsed and folded in on itself. I tried to re mould it but it got worse, splitting where the stick goes in. Returns are not accepted so I am left with an expensive blob. The quality is nothing like previous purchases and although I am not sure, i feel that the timings are also different to previous instructions. Maybe too long to be immersed in hot water.

Instant success

I was diagnosed with mild sleep aponea and I’m waiting for a CPAP machine. I thought I’d give this a try whilst I was waiting. Easy to fit, although it took a second attempt – be careful not to bit too hard on second fit! Reasonably quickly got used to wearing it but instant results. Snoring and breath holding stopped instantly. Although, only two weeks in my teeth are still aching when I wake up but I feel refreshed and my wife is no longer being disturbed. One night I didn’t wear it and I was back to breath holding and snoring. I’m convinced this works well for my condition and I assume it is much better than wearing a CPAP mask.

Think very carefully SomnoGuard 3

Please be aware that if you are a woman, or man with a small mouth, this device will feel very large in your mouth and induce the gag reflex. I can’t even keep it in my mouth for more than 2 seconds without the need to gag and remove it. My lips don’t fit over the plastic at the front and the thought of actually getting to sleep while wearing this is a non-starter. Very disappointed and complete waste of money as no refund is possible as I’ve taken it out of the packet.

Amazing!

Hi I recently purchased this item as snoring has been a serious problem for myself and wife for many years. After checks from the hospital which confirmed there was nothing medically wrong led to even more frustration. After ten years my wife and I finally separated and divorced , we finally reconciled but the snoring was again becoming a serious issue.we researched on snoring on this site and purchased the product with hope of a little noise reduction, night one was an amazing success and has continued to be successful. We have now remarried, and yes the mouth shield came on our honeymoon too. I had absolutely no problem adjusting to wear which again was a blessing. I am a sceptic so didn’t really think such a simple device like this would work but it’s worth every penny and more. I seriously urge anyone to try it , I love my wife and through no fault of my own was causing a terrible amount of stress to her through lack of sleep. Please try it and I sincerely hope it works as well for you as it has for me. The snore test was very accurate too.many thanks
