Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Tomed Somnoguard 3

This is my fourth MAD purchase. I have had quite good success with the previous ones, (except the third which seemed a bit flimsy compared to the others). I bought this one because it has a wider rim around the gums and also it was on special offer. So far, I have been pleased with it and think it is the best so far. I take all the MADs on holiday with me and if I am having a particular bad night, I swap them around until one seems to do the trick. Not a very scientific approach but unfortunately I haven’t found a 100% remedy yet. At least now that I have found these items, I can go away for a few days with my husband and he can usually get a reasonable night’s sleep. So, yes, I would say they are a great success.

Tomed SomnoGuard 3

I have bought many products to lessen my snoring. This I have been told by my wife is the best so far. I can understand how people find it difficult to mould, I did it for slightly less time. It is comfortable but does leaves my mouth rather dry in the morning. It is a good product and I will buy it again.

Review Title

Very successful. Takes a bit of getting used to having it in your mouth and you do tend to ‘dribble’ a bit but worth it for the reduction in noise. Definitely recommend it.

Not for small jaws

I can see how this would work however as I am a small woman, this is another to be added to the pile of devices made for hefty men. I was barely able to get it inside my mouth to fit it without feeling like my jaw was going to dislocate and it left me with lacerations inside my cheeks because it was just too big. For those who like me are on the small-skulled side, don’t bother; it’s made for rugby players.

Thank the Lord

My partner purchased this item after being beaten to death on a regular nightly basis.I have to say thumbs up I get sleep at last. The selfish part of me doesnt care about its little flaws however I do think you I should be honest. The guard is quite dense and softening of the teath after time could become an issue, If his nose becomes blocked he cant breath very well or at all (but like I said that would just mean another good nights sleep for me untill waking up and finding him dead) and the last little niggle is that he’s manged to still make whistling noises though the tiny gaps in the guard (trick is to fall asleep before he does). From his point of view :- the tables have turned (at last he knows how it feels! so I guess it’s not that comfortable, or he realy did enjoy being beaten to death)and he often wakes with a blocked up nose or irritation from the guard. If the makers are reading this we look forward to improvements ie- less bulky and dense. As far as I am concerned it’s worth every penny and what makes me happy makes him happy.
