Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

SomnoGuard 3

Very pleased with this product. Has reduced my snoring enough for my wife and I to be able to sleep. Have used a product before from the BSSAA which was a two part product which clipped together. This was easier to fit than this somnoguard 3 as you fitted the lower part and then the upperpart and once done, clipped them together. The issue with this is the fitting is awkward. The wooden spatula used to fit fell out of the hole during immersion on the hot water. I was aware this could happen as I read a number of reviews which stated this had happened to previous purchasers. Despite taking great care, this still happened. The hole used to place the spatula is also needed to allow breathing, unfortunately as this collapsed it makes it a little hard to breathe. Despite this it is still a great product though hope the BSSAA listen to these reviews and make changes to the fitting procedure/ deign.

Review Title

I had been snoring for about 8 years and knew that it was disturbing my husband’s sleep to some extent, although he said that he didn’t think it was that much of a problem, because he is a light sleeper anyway. I had been to the doctor and then a sleep clinic (where I didn’t snore at all!) and had given up doing anything about it, as I didn’t think there were any solutions. I then found this website, did the test and tried the nasal strips. They didn’t seem to make much difference. Finally, because my husband was having increasing problems sleeping, I decided to try the SomnoGuard. Fitting it seemed a bit complicated, but turned out to be quite straightforward. It worked immediately and even the first night both my husband and I slept very much better and he said I didn’t snore. I found during the first couple of nights that I could only keep it in for half the night – there is no doubt that it does rub a bit and make your jaw and teeth ache, especially to begin with. After a few nights I did a second fitting to make it more comfortable. Even so, it still took a bit of getting used to, especially when trying to get to sleep, but you do gradually get used to it. You have to try to breathe through your nose and not to suck on it! (You also have to accept that you look a bit grotesque!)I’ve now been wearing it for several weeks and even chose to wear it one night when I was sleeping on my own, because I realised how much better and longer I sleep myself with it in. My husband is now not waking up in the early hours unable to get back to sleep and is sleeping much more deeply. In fact, we both overslept the other day! I am apparently now not snoring at all. I would really recommend other people to try it – and it’s worth persevering with, because the discomfort does definitely lessen over time and the sleep gets much better.

Tomed SomnoGuard 3

Having snored very loudly for many years I was very sceptical about this working. It’s true it is a bit fiddly to fit and I am not sure I have really achieved the best fit I could, but, IT WORKS!I would definitely buy one of these again but I have been so impressed I am considering asking my dentist to make a bespoke one for me. If I can’t afford that I will be buying another one and will take a bit more time and care over getting the fit better.

mouth guard

Unfortunately I couldn’t get on with this. I had it fitted by my dentist but even with that, the mouth guard doesn’t seem to fit very well and has fallen out a couple of times during the night. It might just be me being unfortunate, but it didn’t help me 🙁

It seems to work!

Somewhat to my surprise the device does seem to work. There is a lot of snake oil out there! It is a bit uncomfortable at first but you get used to it. My wife notices the difference, so thanks!
