Description

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is a one-piece mandibular advancement device designed to reduce snoring and help manage mild to moderate OSA. Worn during sleep, it gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open, improving airflow.

This boil-and-bite device is made from medically safe, hypoallergenic thermoplastic that softens in hot water and moulds to your bite for a secure, custom fit. For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician), although it can be fitted at home.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fits most jaw sizes due to its flexible material. It’s generally well tolerated, though some users may experience mild, temporary side effects like excess saliva or slight morning discomfort. The instructions for use include all potential side effects.

The material contains no allergens, latex, silicone, BPA, or phthalates. The typical lifespan of the product is 6-12 months, though heavy jaw movement or teeth grinding (bruxism) may shorten this.

Please note: Unobstructed nasal breathing is required to use this product. Consult your dentist if you have concerns about your teeth or jaw alignment before using, or your doctor if you have concerns about your snoring or OSA.

How does the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 work?

Snoring and mild to moderate OSA often occur when the airway becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. This can happen when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue and soft tissues to fall back and restrict airflow.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in a slightly forward position. This helps open the upper airway and stabilise the soft tissues in the throat, including the soft palate and uvula, which are responsible for the vibrations that cause snoring.

By improving airflow and reducing obstructions, the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 can help reduce snoring by limiting tissue vibrations and support more regular nighttime breathing in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

How is the Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 fitted?

Please note: Due to hygiene reasons, fitted or used devices cannot be returned, so refunds aren’t possible if fitted incorrectly.

For best results, we strongly recommend having the device fitted by a healthcare professional (such as a dentist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician).

However, we understand some users may choose to fit the device themselves. If you do, please refer to the detailed instructions provided for a step-by-step guide on how to mould the device. You can also watch the fitting video for additional guidance.

The Tomed SomnoGuard® 3 uses the boil-and-bite method, where the thermoplastic material softens in hot water and hardens to fit your teeth and jaw position once cooled.

The fitting process takes about 15 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Heat the device in hot water for 20 seconds.
  2. Bite into the softened material with your lower jaw slightly forward.
  3. Cool the device in cold water to harden it and set the shape.
Additional FAQs

What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a type of mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It works by gently moving your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open. This can reduce snoring and is often recommended to support symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

You may have also heard mandibular advancement devices (often abbreviated to MADs) called a mandibular advancement splint, mandibular repositioning device, or even a mandibular device for snoring – but these are all just different names for the same type of oral device.

What’s the difference between a mandibular advancement device and a mouth guard?

Although they can look similar, a mandibular advancement device is specifically designed to reposition the jaw and improve airflow. A regular mouth guard, used for sports or teeth grinding, doesn’t move the jaw forward and won’t usually help with snoring.

People often search for terms like mandibular mouth guard, MAD mouth guard, or snoring mouth guard when what they’re actually looking for is a mandibular advancement device – the correct type of oral appliance for reducing snoring and easing the symptoms of mild to moderate OSA.

Do mandibular advancement devices really work?

Many people find that a mandibular advancement device helps to reduce snoring, though results can differ from person to person. Clinical studies indicate they can be effective. They’re also recognised within the NHS as a treatment option for snoring and for some cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Are mandibular advancement devices comfortable?

Like any oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device can take a little time to get used to. Adjustable or custom-fit designs usually provide the best comfort for long-term use.

Amazing and comfortable

I purchased a SomnoGuard AP2 a few weeks ago and had immediate success(see my review on the AP2 page) When I saw the deal for the SomnoGuard 3 I thought it would be a perfect 2nd/emergency device so I bought one straight away. After reading the reviews I noted that fitting was thought to be fiddly by most so I took my time and watched online fitting videos several times, noting that the 20 second immersion time appears to be crucial. Once set up fitting went well with only a minor collapse in the wall due to one of my front teeth being crocked. Once fitted the device felt so comfortable I didn’t think it would work and that it would fall out. However first night success without any discomfort or snoring! I would recommend this to anyone and I ow have a fantastic device that may take over from my AP2!

SomnoGuard

Although I have been very pleased with my SomnoGuard I bought one for my wife and it proved immediately non-useable, possibly due to the configuration of her teeth and jaw. This has been a great disappointment as we understand you do not offer refunds.

Somnoguard 3

Unlike some other users I found this device pretty easy to set up. Evidence so far is that it has made some reduction in my snoring. I used to have a somnowell brace, which was excellent, but managed to lose it in some hotel. So I thought I would try one of these as they are far cheaper before I invest in a new somnowell. I have had it for 2 weeks and may in another week or so reset it with my jaw slightly further forward, to see if that is still comfortable and if it helps with any further reduction. All in all I would recommend.

Not worth money

It’s very hard to get comfortable and sleep all night with it, I find it on the floor most mornings. As a student it’s a lot of money especially when it doesn’t work but the hospital recommended it and I thought worth a try but wish I never bought it now. It’s very similar to a gum shield like you get in sport shops.

Tomed SomnoGuard3 Review

Product arrived last week. A couple of attempts before I felt it was fitted correctly. Slightly uncomfortable when wearing for the first time, but it gets better quickly.I thought my snoring just woke up my wife, but after a week, I realise that it was actually making both of us have poor nights sleep. I haven’t been woken once to tell me to stop snoring since I started using it.It has made an enormous difference and pretty much eliminated my snoring. What a result!!
