National Stop Snoring Week 2008

THE BRITISH SNORING & SLEEP APNOEA ASSOCIATION
NATIONAL STOP SNORING WEEK
21 - 26 April 2008
With National Stop Snoring Week just a few months away we will be making even more noise than ever this year!
As a result of our research we will be discussing the physical and psychological effects that snoring has on both snorers and their bed partners.
Snoring is affecting the health of the nation:
Research reveals that both snorers and their bed partners are more likely to suffer adverse
health conditions than non-snoring couples. Snorers are at a much higher risk of adverse
health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol,
and with snoring sounds reaching up to 100dB, it's little wonder that bed partners are
suffering from excessive tiredness, headache, gastro-intestinal irritability, nausea and
palpitations.
I'm sick of his snoring:
Sleep deprivation caused by snoring can have a devastating psychosocial effect on the bed
partner. Our research found that 97% of bed partners suffer from chronic sleep deprivation
as they are prevented from getting to sleep and are constantly woken during the night. They
claim to have just 3-5 hours sleep every night. Conditions such as lack of concentration and
motivation, anxiety, depression, irritability and being argumentative are more apparent in bed
partners of snorers than those of non-snorers.
Does he care that he keeps you awake?
With 15 million snorers in the UK, more and more bed partners are complaining of sleep
deprivation and the consequent health effects. More than three quarters of bed partners
believe their bad health would improve if the snoring stopped. But just how many snorers
care enough about their partner's bad health to try and stop? We will be discussing this
dilemma and hope to encourage more snorers to take action to stop for the sake of their bed
partner and for a lasting relationship.
